EcoLab: Furniture Design + Functional Art from Salvage
ARCH 6377

March 2 - April 15, 2023
CAP Second Floor Gallery

EcoFab is a green-build course in which students design and fabricate eco-furniture, architecture elements, clothing, a product prototype, or other unique items of their own creation and making.

Salvage, recycled and found objects, material surplus, vintage, and discards are the sources for creative inspiration and use.

From design through cleaning and finishing, eco techniques are taught and applied.  Beautiful, powerful work is produced by adhering to the rule:  Find, don’t buy.

In this course, students are taught to –

  • Work fearlessly and without inhibition
  • Consider that mistakes and odd ideas may be the best design paths
  • Build real joints, details, and connections using steel, wood, and other materials
  • Apply green techniques in all phases of work, from modelbuilding to finishing
  • Use local sources for salvage and construction by visiting waste feedstock sites
  • Understand that enjoyment of work yields the highest quality project
  • Help clean the environment while making beautiful, functional art.
