About the Candidate: Omar Al-Hassawi is an Associate Professor at Washington State University’s School of Design and Construction (WSU SDC) and holds a Ph.D. in Design, Environment, and the Arts from Arizona State University (ASU). Omar has seven years of professional experience working on projects across the Middle East as well as 10 years of teaching experience between WSU and ASU. The trust that Dr. Al-Hassawi has built among SDC faculty and students presented him with the opportunity to serve as Director of the Master of Architecture program between 2019 and 2021. Omar’s academic achievements have been nationally recognized by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) who awarded him with the 2021 AIAS/ACSA New Faculty Teaching Award. Students under Omar’s supervision have received several regional, national, and international design competition recognitions, most notably the 2019 AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten for Students Design Award. Dr. Al-Hassawi conducts research in two primary areas which are advancing the performance of passive and low-energy environmental control systems as well as workforce development in high-performing energy-efficient buildings. Omar is the Primary Investigator on a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) which is being used to launch two new certificate programs and one new graduate degree program in Energy ConsciousConstruction (ECC). Under Omar’s leadership, the ECC certificate programs have recently received the U.S. DOE Zero Energy Design Designation, the only certificates at a national level that are delivered fully online and hold this recognition.
