Putin’s War in Ukraine — Explained

As we enter the second month of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, numerous questions remain unanswered.
 

• Why Ukraine?
• Why now?
• Could the war have been avoided?
• What is the Kremlin’s narrative in trying to justify its invasion?

In addition to these questions, Professors Jose and Stefes will try to answer how the international community has reacted to the invasion.

• Why has this war received so much more attention than other wars?
• What explains the resolve of the world community to counter Russia’s aggression in Ukraine (but not, for instance, in Syria)?
• Why do Ukrainian refugees experience differential treatment?
• Finally, what does international law say about Russia’s invasion and actions during this war?

Professors Betcy Jose and Christoph Stefes have worked for more than a dozen years on Russia’s incursions into neighboring countries (e.g., Georgia in 2008).
